Writing the Wild Sample Prompts
Our most transformative moments of growth are embodied, tactile: We can hear, taste, smell them. We can feel them. What sets Writing the Wild apart from other writing programs is the unique combination of on- and offline resources—while our gatherings are virtual, physical mail is a core component of engagement in this journey.
Below, you may download sample prompts. Each printable pdf contains three prompts from one of these categories:
writing practice
nature immersion (coming to know your own landscape)
creative cross training (simple artistic practices to sharpen your prisms of vision)
playful rest (essential to the creative life)
These prompts are co-written by Krissy Kludt, Stephanie Jenkins, J. Drew Lanham, and Rick Lindroth. (See Who We Are to learn more about the team.)
An Ecology of Hope: A Free Resource
In January, Writing the Wild hosted An Ecology of Hope: Finding Resilience in a Wounded World, a conversation with Krissy Kludt, J. Drew Lanham and ecologist Rick Lindroth.
We were overwhelmed and moved by the interest in the event. We did not record it—the moment was ephemeral, and the ecosystem of humans that came together that evening through each person’s participation could not be caught or captured. But, in an effort to share the essence of our time together, we’ve collaborated with the brilliantly talented Kate Rutter to create a two-page pdf resource we’d love to share with you. Feel free to share it!
Our suggestion would be to spend a little time with the first page, jotting down any questions, memories, and reflections that come to mind. What on this page inspires you? What scares you? What angers you? What images bring discomfort or peace?
Then, spend a little time with the second page—a page full of suggested prompts and practices. What do you feel inspired toward? What practice might you try to kindle your hope? How might you do this in community, weaving your own ecology of hope?

About the event (January 23, 2025):
An Ecology of Hope: Finding Resilience in a Wounded World
with Rick Lindroth, J. Drew Lanham, and Krissy Kludt
We live in an era of environmental degradation and socio-political upheaval unparalleled in human history. Surrendering to despair is a temptation many of us confront daily. In this free workshop, we will ask: What of hope?
Guided by J. Drew Lanham and Krissy Kludt with special guest Rick Lindroth, this lab will explore the meanings of hope, how it is nourished and sustained, and how it enhances our connections to Earth and other beings (human and more-than-human). Rick will share about hope from his perspective as a Professor of Ecology (Emeritus) who studied the ecological consequences of global environmental change for 35 years. Drew and Krissy will guide participants in their own reflection with prompts for writing. We will end our time together with a moderated Q&A.
With head, heart and hands as our tools for reflective triangulation, we'll seek to discover how hope can sustain our spirits and empower our work in the world.
